3 Ways to Address Anxiety & Overload in Autistic Children

Kids with autism often experience anxiety due to sensory overload & an inability to self-regulate. If you’re a parent of a child with autism, you have probably spent a lot of time trying to understand the subtleties of what causes or contributes to their stressful, anxious responses.

Whether you're trying to identify patterns of behavior or avoid “triggers,” it’s natural to want to minimize the anxiety in our children. Here are 3 ways to address anxiety + overload in autistic children:

(1) Create & Maintain Routines

Routines are important for all children. The repetition of a consistent routine helps to develop proper behavior in different environments. Routines are extra important in the development for children with autism. So how do you create a routine to support your child?

Here's an idea: Breakdown common activities, create a schedule, & practice performing the schedule with your child.

Maybe the event is dinnertime every night with the goal of sitting calmly at the table & eating with family. Start by breaking down the different tasks such as washing hands, setting places, or filling water cups. Then, create a visual planner demonstrating each step in pictures. Introduce your child to the process & practice it with them until it becomes a habit.

(2) Calming strategies

If your child is able, you can teach self-soothing strategies. Simple techniques such as slowly counting to ten & breathing deeply can go a long way. You can also work with your child toward more difficult, but grounding techniques such as meditation or visualization.

Another strategy is to have a sensory toolbox on hand with fidgets, favorite smells, & things known to calm your child down.

Lastly, the simplest & always available option is to give your child a hug. It sounds simple, but it works! A hug provides deep touch pressure which signals calming stimuli to the brain.

(3) Use a Weighted compression vest

Here at Harkla, we aim to help your child live a happy & healthy life. Helping a child manage anxiety & sensory overload can go a long way in achieving that goal.

That's why we created a weighted compression vest! Click here to learn more about the vest.

A weighted compression vest applies deep touch pressure to sensitive areas of the body. Deep touch pressure releases serotonin in the body which turns into melatonin, as well as decreased nervous system activity.

Many families using the vest have seen incredible changes in their sensory seeker's behavior: Less anxiety, less fidgeting, & improved focus.
