About the Weighted Lap Pad

Much like a weighted blanket, the weighted lap pad is a sensory tool that offers Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) to a person’s legs as it rests on the lap when in a seated position. The weighted lap pad is often used in classrooms to provide some sensory input and help students stay seated. The weighted lap pad can also be used anywhere when adults or children need to stay sitting for an extended period. It’s wonderful for activities like:

  • Car rides
  • Plane rides
  • Mealtimes
  • While doing homework
  • Sitting in the grocery cart

Our minky dot design makes this a perfect sensory blanket, as the soft minky fabric, combined with the dots and added weight makes a sensory input trifecta! This sensory combo gives your child an easy way to fulfill their fidget needs while calming them with the weight. Our goal at Harkla is to help your child live a happier, healthier life, and we both know getting them to relax and focus in class is one of the highest priorities.

What is a weighted lap pad?

The weighted lap pad from Harkla is a smaller version of the weighted blanket. It’s a sensory tool that offers deep touch pressure (DTP) to a person’s legs as it rests on the lap when in a seated position. With its soft, minky dotted fabric, the lap pad is the perfect addition to help regulate the nervous system.

Who can benefit from the lap pad?

While everyone can benefit from a lap pad, the weighted lap pad was designed with sensory in mind - specifically children with sensory processing challenges, including those with or without a diagnosis (i.e., autism, ADHD, etc.) who struggle with self-regulation, anxiety, attention, and more.

Let’s break it down! Let’s consider a child who struggles to remain seated and provide attention to sit-down tasks. This child fidgets constantly, may leave their seat too soon, and is easily distracted. This can occur in the classroom, during car rides, or even during mealtime. This child may benefit from using the weighted lap pad during these situations. It provides calming DTP that can help regulate the nervous system to help improve sustained attention.

Now let’s look at a child who struggles with anxiety - anxiety with car rides, anxiety during new situations, anxiety with transitions. This child may refuse to leave the house or attend social events, cry or meltdown while transitioning from one activity to the next, or attempt to run away from situations. This child may benefit from using the weighted lap pad before challenging situations, during car rides, and as a way to decompress after social events.

The weighted lap pad can also be beneficial during playtime to provide proprioceptive input, providing heavy work to the joints and muscles and thus providing a sense of calm. It can even be used during nap time or at bedtime to provide DTP, which helps facilitate sleep. Additionally, the lap pad is easy to transport to different environments such as school or a relative’s house.

Sensory Inputs Provided by The Weighted Lap Pad

The weighted lap pad specifically provides proprioceptive input - deep pressure as well as tactile input, which is also known as Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). This type of sensory input has been shown to provide a calming effect for various individuals and situations.

Proprioceptive input

Proprioception is the awareness of the position and movement of the body. Sensory receptors are located on your skin, joints, and muscles. When we move, these sensory receptors send signals to our brain, telling it about the movement's effort, force, and heaviness. Then our body is able to provide an appropriate response.

When we think about proprioceptive movement, we can also include heavy work - any movement that works the muscles and deep pressure - any input that provides pressure to our body, and vibration. Proprioceptive input is typically calming to the nervous system.

Individuals are usually not over-responsive to proprioception, meaning they don't have over-reactions to this type of sensory input. We do, however, see individuals who are under-responsive or sensory craving, meaning they want more heavy work, crashing, hugs, etc. These individuals typically respond well to the input that a weighted blanket provides.

The weighted lap pad provides proprioceptive input as it lays on your legs or upper body. You can lay it over just your feet or legs, up across your torso, or over your chest and arms - whatever feels good! You can also fold it to provide more weight, or roll it up and lay in next to your body. There are a lot of ways to fold and manipulate the weighted lap pad to fit your needs.

Tips For Introducing The Weighted Lap Pad

The first thing we need to do when introducing something new is have empathy for the child who is resistant. Empathy allows us to look deeper, use our sensory goggles, and try to understand WHY the child is resisting.

If your child is resistant to using the weighted lap pad, try these tips to engage them:

  • Talk about what the lap pad is used for. Use positive verbiage. For example, “This can help your body feel calm.”
  • Start small. Allow your child to explore the lap pad before using it. Take your time. Talk about how the material feels. Talk about how heavy it is (or isn’t).
  • Try using it when your child is happy and calm during the day. “Hey, let’s try your lap pad/blanket for 5 minutes while you’re playing!” This provides a positive association. Let them control when they want to stop using it for the moment.
  • Use the lap pad during play activities. Use it as a sled. Roll up like a burrito. Make it fun!

Tips for Incorporating the Weighted Lap Pad into Your Child’s Routine

Once your child is comfortable playing with and using the lap pad, you can begin to incorporate it into their day and evening as needed - to help with anxiety, focus and attention, sleep, and overstimulation.

Using the lap pad at home:

  • During the bedtime routine
  • During the first 30-60 minutes in bed
  • Intermittently throughout the night
  • During a quiet break during the day
  • While reading/watching TV
  • During sit-down focus tasks at the table or laying on the floor
  • While riding in the car
  • During a break after school

Using the lap pad at school:

  • While seated during class time
  • During a break, while reading or studying
  • On the bus

The goal is to provide just the right amount of calming input from the weighted lap pad to help your child’s body feel cool, calm, and collected.

As your child experiences success using the lap pad, you can begin trialing shorter periods of using it. Keep an eye on your child, talk with them to see how they feel. If they don’t communicate with words, observe their body language and document everything!

Final Thoughts On the Harkla Weighted Lap Blanket

The weighted lap pad can be a great addition to your child’s routine. There are so many ways to utilize the lap pad to provide your child with a calm, organized sensory system in all environments.

Just remember, it’s not a magic fix or a quick fix to solving behavior and sensory challenges! It is a tool that can be used in coordination with other tools to help your child experience a happy life!

Why the weight?

Deep Touch Pressure

The science behind our weighted products is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). DTP is simply distributed weight across the body. If you'd like to read more about the natural benefits of DTP, we wrote a guide to it here.

DTP releases serotonin in the body which turns into melatonin, as well as decreased nervous system activity. These combine to give a feeling of calm, relaxation and naturally improved sleep. If you'd like to dive into the studies about weighted lap pads and the science behind them, we wrote an article on it here.

It's small, but efficient

I guess I have to say the weighted thing is a great idea. My daughter is all over the place sometimes. Not diagnosed, but daddy is adhd and given her beautiful mind and energy I think we can safely say she's just like her daddy. This really does what it should. Even if it's just sitting through a movie we're all watching together. Or setting it on her lap while we're coloring or hanging out, it helps to keep her at ease. Honestly it helps me a bit too. The weight gives a support and makes you feel secure. The squishyness of it offers something to fidget with. It's designed very well and has held up for months already. We are actually thankful for this around here. I think it's definitely worth giving it a shot.

It's a weighted blanket

This fits in an adult's lap. It's obviously weighted. It seems a bit expensive, in that at time of review, it's $53.99. You can get a weighted blanket to fit a queen sized bed for the same price. Hence, in my view, the value just isn't there to justify this.

Cozy and lightly weighted

This is super soft and my kid loved how it felt on her. I wish it was a bit longer to really cover over her lap perfectly, as it kept slipping off. Otherwise, a great item.

Good quality

If you are looking for a 'portable' weighted pad then this will do the trick. It is small, so this is not a multiple purpose blanket. We have found it to be soft, a good weight for the lap and the lavender scent is not overpowering. It feels nice to the touch as well as on the lap. There are small polka dot like pieces of material to add another sensory factor. This one would be good for travel or even the bus for someone who needed a little extra grounding. Overall, this is a very good weighted blanket and my only con would be the price tag, but these kinds of things are often pricey.

My 4 year old loves it

My son is a fan of pressure and hugs. So naturally he loves the pressure of this lap pad and as you can see, he also loves the texture. This has been great for watching movies, TV shows, and naps. It helps to keep him seated when we're reading to him too. He does wish it was bigger hah so next time I'll be sure to get him a full sized blanket.

We love this weighted lap pad!

I ordered the Harkla weighted lap pad for my daughter during her daily reading time. She reads well, but it's not her favorite thing to do, and she tends to get antsy. She's loved minky-dotted fabric since a baby and loves her weighted blanket in the winter. When I came across this minky weighted lap pad, I thought I'd give it a try, and I'm glad I did because she loves it. This weighted lap pad has become a part of her daily reading routine. It's not large (21" x 19") and doesn't take up much space. She can neatly store her book and this weighted pad under our coffee table for quick and easy access. She grabs her weighted lap pad, her book, and sets the timer on her watch, and away she reads. From time to time we catch her rubbing or pinching the minky dots like she did when she was a baby. I think it does offer some comfort as well as relax her, which allows her to focus more. The lap pad only weighs 5 pounds, just enough to offer her a little comfort and warmth when reading. Our daughter doesn't have any sensory issues, and this product can be therapeutic for both children and adults, whether you're curling up reading a book or just sitting at the computer. I'm thinking this weighted lap pad may even be beneficial for my father, who has dementia.I especially like that this weighted lap pad does come with a zippered carry bag, making it convenient for not only home use but road trips too. I was disappointed to see that the description mentions an easy-to-wash removable outer cover, which ours did not have. Our weighted pad is sewn on all four sides, and the only thing removable is the travel bag that it comes with. I'm not sure how to launder this pad other than putting it inside a laundry bag before placing it in the washing machine. The thought of the seams coming apart and filling my washing machine with thousands of tiny glass beads is a concern, so I will be reaching out to the manufacturer before laundering.

Great for Comforting My Son and Portable Use

I was looking for a way to help my son feel more comfortable, especially during times when he needs a bit of extra support. I got this weighted lap pad to see if it could offer him some calm during activities like reading or sitting quietly.Pros:- Calming effect with just the right amount of weight- Compact and easy to carry around- Soft fabric with a textured side for sensory input- Stays in place well on the lapCons:- A bit pricey for the size- Could be slightly larger for better coverage

Expensive for what it is...

$65 for a small weighted blanket is more than you should be paying for this, considering the price of regular weighted blankets and their size... That said, the quality is good, the stitching is well done, and the weight is right. Shop around and see if you can find similar for cheaper, otherwise this is an okay buy.

Perfect for placing on kids lap during table work and meals. It has help to regulate my sensory seeking behaviors. It is small so it won’t work as blanket,

quality, soft, high price

This Harkla weighted lap blanket/pad is nice quality, soft and I like the minky dot texture on one side. It is easy to wash and dry on low heat.It is a bit high in price for the size.Nowadays, you can get a nice quality weighted blanket that is much larger for the same price.

why is this so expensive!

wowzers $60+bucks. yikes. seem like they are taking advantage. however it is heavy and i suppose the freight on these ain’t cheap.it’s fun to sit with on your lap.the texture of the fabric is lovely it’s also fun to touch.it is very nice quality piece. so there is another reason for high cost.made in china.

Really great for kids with sensory needs!

My five year old has a lot of the same sensory issues that I do - always fidgeting, hard to sit still sometimes. I personally really like a weighted blanket, it just calms my body almost instantly. My blanket is too heavy for my daughter though. I tried a weighted vest for her but she didn't like it. I decided to give this lap pad a try.She really likes it! The very first try, while watching some cartoons, I put it on her lap and she relaxed immediately! Instead of bouncing all over the couch and flipping and rolling all over like usual, she was able to just sit back and relax!

great for travel!

I know this was intended for kids but I use it as an adult. I have sensory and anxiety challenges and love sleeping with my full size weighted Gravity blanket every night when at home. I travel a lot and miss that weighted feeling when sleeping away. Of course doesn’t compare to having a full size for sleep but for me makes a nice difference to sleep with it on my chest.

Fantastic!

I put this on the base pillow when stacking two pillows on my bed, and it perfectly kept it from traveling. Also, when I needed a pillow under my leg after a knee sprain, I put it on that pillow, so it too would be stable. WHAT A GREAT PRODUCT!

Perfect size for my pre-teen

I've heard that weighted blankets help with focus for fidgity kids. I got this for my daughter, but I was afraid she would fight me on using it, she's very sensitive about her learning problems due to ADHD. She likes it alot, and since she is always cold she didn't even question why I got her a lap blanket!

Comfortable calming; not just for kids

I don’t have kids & YES! I love this small weighted blanket. It’s so soft & it machine washes well; understandably it does take a while to dry (don’t put it in a dryer!).I’m sure kids will like it too. It’s just very comforting (weighs 5 lbs). I’m seriously considering the full blanket.I use it every afternoon & highly recommend it.

Nice weight

This is such a nice weighted blanket. The fabric is soft and silky and the squares are sewed tight. This weighted blanket isn't just for kids, think about using for anyone, especially the elderly when they are sundowning. The inserts and the bag that came with this weighted blanket is full of helpful knowledge.

Harkla good for sensory needs

I can't decide if I should use this weighted lap pad for my classroom as intended, or keep it for my home! The lap pad appears sturdy and well-made, and the size is as described, small for a child's lap. It comes in a zip bag for storage. As expected, the pad is about 5 pounds; I cannot tell what they use for weight. It might be a fine sand, as I do not feel any pellets. The minky fabric is very soft, and I like the texture of the bumps. As a primary-grade teacher, I would use this pad for young students who need some sensory or calming support in the classroom. It is perfect for that purpose, and I think it will hold up well. I would also gladly keep this for my home, and use it for my ADHD son for calming and rest, as well as for my own anxiety, over my shoulders or on my lap.

Great for car rides

my 9 month old needs this for the car! she loves to have her blanket that is weighted this makes it easier in the car. not as heavy but does great. The road trip this weekend was so much nicer with this and easy to use. It is great, and easy to put on her lap keeps her calm.

So Soothing!

I love the feel of this weighted lap pad! I placed it on my lap and instantly felt soothed and relaxed. I tried it on my husband and daughter, too, and both agree that it is comforting. I am hoping to give this to my mother-in-law for Christmas, who is in a care center for dementia. I think this will help her a great deal. This lap pad is well-constructed, with no hanging threads or holes. It is made using soft minky fabric, so it is nice and comfortable, too. I also love that it came in a storage bag that zips up. A great way to store it when not being used. Nice!
