Money Management For Therapists With Amirra, OTR/L

Let’s face it: talking about money can be uncomfortable. However, for occupational therapists (OTs), especially those just starting out, financial clarity is just as important as clinical confidence.

Pediatric OT and money coach Amira will discuss a critical yet often overlooked topic: money mindset, student loan debt, and building wealth as a therapist.

Meet Amira: Pediatric OT Turned Money Coach

Amira is a pediatric occupational therapist working in early intervention in Phoenix, Arizona. Since graduating three years ago, she has combined her passion for pediatric care with a new mission: helping therapists feel confident with their money.

What started as an Instagram account sharing insights into early intervention has become a financial coaching platform for therapists. Amira noticed a major gap: Therapists are trained to support others but rarely taught how to support themselves financially.

“We’re not just therapists—we’re people with goals, dreams, and student loans.”

Why Money Matters For Therapists

Money isn’t everything, but as Amira shared, itis a tool that impacts:

  • Burnout.

  • Job satisfaction.

  • Quality of care delivered.

  • Long-term life choices.

Many therapists take on unsustainable caseloads just to keep up with bills or student loan payments, often at the expense of their health and performance.

Amira’s approach is simple: “You can love what you do and get paid well for it.

The Reality Of Student Loan Debt

Amira got vulnerable with us. She graduated with over $200,000 in student loan debt.

She described the moment she finally faced that number—a moment filled with tears and overwhelm. But she used that as fuel to learn everything she could about personal finance.

Her first tip for new grads?

Step 1: Sit With The Feelings.

Before you build a budget or make a plan, acknowledge the fear, guilt, or anger. Then, once you’re ready...

Step 2: Face Your Numbers.

Calculate your loan totals, interest rates, and monthly payment estimates.

The Therapist Mindset Shift: Money Is Not Taboo

One of Amira’s goals is tonormalize talking about money in the therapy world. Many therapists—especially women—feel uncomfortable negotiating salaries or asking questions about benefits.

Closed mouths don’t get fed.

Negotiating Pay As A New Grad

Here are Amira’s top negotiation tips:

  • Always ask for the job offer in writing.

  • Do your research (average salary by state, setting, experience level).

  • Understand what your work brings in (billing rates vs. your pay).

  • Negotiate via email—not on the phone.

  • Keep emotion out of the conversation; use logic and data.

Investing 101 For Therapists (Even With Student Loans)

Amira shared one of the most powerful insights: “You don’t have to wait until your student loans are gone to start investing.” In fact, if your student loan interest is below 7%, it may make more sense to invest early and benefit from compound growth.

Her Favorite Starter Strategy:

  • Open aRoth IRA (especially if you're in a lower tax bracket).

  • Invest inindex funds (low-cost, broadly diversified).

  • Even small, consistent contributions matter.

Introducing The Miracle Money Blueprint

Amira’s course,The Miracle Money Blueprint, is a 5-week live coaching program that:

  • Helps therapists shift their money mindset.

  • Teaches budgeting, income maximization, and debt strategy.

  • Provides actionable steps for investing.

  • Builds a supportive community of financially empowered professionals.

It’s designed specifically for OTs, PTs, and SLPs, but the principles apply toanyone looking to take charge of their finances.

Final Takeaways From Amira

  • Start now. Don’t wait until you “make more” to start budgeting or investing.

  • You can do both. Pay off debtand live your life.

  • Know your worth. Advocate for yourself, in and outside the clinic.

It’s not just about the number in your bank account. For Amira, wealth means:

  • Enjoying a morning Pilates walk.

  • Having peace of mind about emergencies.

  • Investing in a vacuum, she loves (yes, really!).

  • Tipping generously because shecan.
