Autism Is Not A Burden With Jessie From @daily_dig

Autism isn’t something to feel sorry for; it’s a journey filled with both challenges and incredible rewards. Jesse from @daily_dig, a mom of an autistic child, shares her heartfelt experiences raising her son, John.

Through her story, we gain a clearer view of the realities of autism, from understanding sensory needs to building a strong support network. Here’s a closer look at Jesse’s journey, full of insights, struggles, and hope.

Recognizing Early Signs of Autism: Jesse’s Observations With John

Jesse first noticed differences in John around 18 months. While he initially met his developmental milestones, she soon observed changes: his speech began to regress, he stopped using familiar words like “Mama” and “Dada,” and no longer pointed, clapped, or responded to his name.

These subtle changes signaled to Jesse that something might be different. Despite her limited knowledge of autism at the time, Jesse trusted her instincts, which proved essential for seeking early support.

Navigating The Diagnosis: The Power Of Persistence

Jesse’s experience highlights a common challenge: advocating for a diagnosis in a healthcare system that doesn’t always provide clear answers. When she raised her concerns, doctors ran tests but didn’t mention autism.

Only through Jesse’s persistence did John receive an early diagnosis, opening doors to valuable early intervention services. Her determination allowed her to find the therapies that would benefit John most, demonstrating the power of advocacy in securing the proper support.

Building The Right Support System

Today, John receives specialized support through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) at his school, where he attends weekly speech therapy, occupational therapy, and adaptive physical education. Additionally, he participates in private therapy, helping him make meaningful progress and develop social skills.

Jesse emphasizes the importance of a support system of compassionate therapists and professionals. For families starting, building connections with other parents, professionals, and support groups creates a strong community that empowers them to navigate each stage of autism.

Sensory-Friendly Tips For Everyday Life

Raising an autistic child often requires extra planning, especially for outings. To help John manage sensory overload, Jesse prepares him with familiar objects and visual schedules.

When he has meltdowns, she stays calm, giving him a reassuring squeeze and letting him know she’s there for him. She also discovered that sensory play with bins filled with various textures has helped John explore and develop new skills in a low-pressure environment.

Addressing Myths About Autism: “Autism Is Not A Burden”

One of the most pervasive myths about autism is the idea that it’s a burden. Jesse often hears sympathetic responses when sharing her son’s diagnosis, as if autism were something sad.

Instead, she sees autism as a different way of experiencing the world. While autism requires additional planning, it’s far from a burden—an opportunity to see life through a unique lens.

Finding Confidence As A Parent Of An Autistic Child

For parents feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about the future, Jesse offers simple advice: take things one day at a time. Each stage of the journey brings challenges, but it also brings moments of joy and growth.

Embracing the present and celebrating small victories can make a big difference. Parents can empower their children to thrive with patience, resources, and supportive people.

Takeaways For Parents And Therapists

1. Trust Your Instincts.

If your child’s development seems off, seek evaluations, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

2. Build A Support Network.

Finding a team of supportive professionals and parents who understand autism is invaluable.

3. Incorporate Interests.

Using your child’s favorite activities or toys can make learning more engaging.

4. Prepare For Outings.

Familiar items and visual aids can make outings smoother for children with sensory needs.

5. Celebrate Progress.

Over time, consistent strategies can make challenges more manageable, helping your child grow and thrive.

Embrace The Journey

Jesse’s story reminds us that, while this journey may look different from what some expect, it’s filled with moments of laughter, learning, and deep connections that make every effort worthwhile. For parents just beginning this path, remember that you are not alone.

Along the way, you’ll find a network of families, professionals, and communities who understand your challenges and are ready to support you. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to a brighter, more fulfilling future for your child.
