In the evolving field of pediatric development, few names stand out as prominently as Dr. Laura Hansen. As a board-certified chiropractic pediatric diplomate, neurofeedback specialist, and certified autism specialist, Dr. Hansen has dedicated nearly three decades to understanding and helping children with developmental delays.
Through her practice, Connect My Brain, she has become a leading figure in brain mapping, neurofeedback, and brain-based patient management, supporting families and children on their journeys to improved cognitive and emotional health.
Brain mapping involves placing a cap with 19 channels on a patient’s head, which collects electrical signals from the brain. These signals are then analyzed to identify areas of concern, such as imbalances in brain waves that could affect attention, anxiety, or motor function.
Brain mapping allows Dr. Laura to take a three-tier approach to brain health: mechanical, chemical, and brain-based. In her clinic, this methodology is applied to children as young as 18 months old to help diagnose and treat developmental delays.
Instead of merely addressing symptoms, Dr. Laura focuses on the underlying neurological patterns that might prevent optimal development, offering personalized interventions to rewire the brain's functions. By pinpointing these imbalances, Dr. Laura can implement neurofeedback and other therapies to stimulate more balanced brain activity, helping children develop more effectively.
One of the most significant influences on Dr. Laura's career was her personal experience with her daughter’s traumatic brain injury (TBI). When her daughter was 16, she suffered a life-threatening car accident that resulted in a diffuse axonal injury, a condition similar to shaken baby syndrome.
For two months, Dr. Laura's daughter was hospitalized, requiring intensive rehabilitation to relearn essential functions like walking, talking, and eating. Dr. Laura drew upon her brain mapping and neurofeedback knowledge to aid her daughter’s recovery, incorporating chiropractic care, functional medicine, and neurofeedback into the rehabilitation process.
This personal ordeal gave Dr. Hansen an intimate understanding of what many parents go through when their children face neurological challenges, inspiring her to deepen her research and refine her methods.
In her practice, Dr. Laura employs a wide range of therapies to help her patients, but neurofeedback and reflex integration are two of the most powerful tools in her arsenal.
Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback uses real-time brainwave monitoring to train the brain to function more optimally. Patients engage in activities like watching movies or playing games while their brainwaves are monitored.
If the brainwaves function correctly, the screen remains bright; if they deviate, the screen dims.
Reflex Integration
Primitive reflexes like the Moro reflex are automatic responses present at birth. If they persist beyond their typical developmental timeline, these reflexes can interfere with higher brain functions.
Dr. Laura uses techniques to integrate these reflexes, helping to calm the nervous system and allow for better development of motor skills, attention, and emotional regulation.
At Connect My Brain, Dr. Laura provides more than just standard treatment; she offers a personalized, intensive approach that focuses on each child's specific needs. Many families opt for week-long intensives, during which children receive therapy twice daily for five days.
These intensives allow for more focused intervention and more significant progress in a shorter period. Afterward, families often continue with a home program and weekly check-ins, ensuring the progress made during the intensive is sustained.
Looking ahead, Dr. Laura hopes to expand her virtual platform, allowing her to reach families across the globe. Her podcast has already started to draw international attention, connecting her with parents and professionals seeking alternative approaches to pediatric care.
Dr. Laura aims to create a community of families and professionals committed to helping children unlock their full potential by continuing to share her expertise and expand her reach.
Dr. Laura Hansen’s work is a testament to the power of combining personal experience with professional expertise. Through her dedication to brain-based care and unwavering commitment to helping families, Dr. Laura has transformed the lives of countless children.
Her approach offers a hopeful and effective alternative to traditional pediatric care, focusing on the whole child rather than just the symptoms. As she continues to expand her practice and share her knowledge, her work will undoubtedly shape the future of pediatric development for years to come.
