Why The Weight?

The science behind weighted blankets is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). DTP is simply distributed weight across the body. If you'd like to read more about the natural benefits of DTP, we wrote a guide to it here.

DTP releases serotonin in the body which turns into melatonin, as well as decreased nervous system activity. These combine to give a feeling of calm, relaxation and naturally improved sleep. If you'd like to dive into the studies about weighted blankets and the science behind them, we wrote an article on it here.

Kids Weighted Blanket

My nine yr old son has always struggled with self regulation and sleep. He loves his weighted blanket from Harkla. He sleeps better. It is not a total fix but it allows him to calm more quickly at bed time. He has had occasional accidents wetting the bed(not due to the blanket) and it washed well on delicate and has held up. He really likes the pressure. My only complainted is that he doesnt like the cover.

It's great.

I own two of the Harkla weighted blankets, simply because no one can make the perfect sized blanket that will cover from my shoulders to my feet without too much weight. So I sleep with both blankets so my feet can be covered as well as my shoulders. I sleep on a twin sized mattress, getting just a single, bigger blanket just won't do.

First off, unpacking and assembling this blanket is the biggest pain ever. I get that parents are probably fine assembling it, but me myself, no. I have fine&gross motor difficulties, which makes for tying all the ties, a very long and tedious process that will take all night. The cover itself is nice and soft, I love that about it. I also sleep with a Harkla compression sheet and I had a major problem with the blanket sliding off the bed too easily, so I clamped the blankets to the mattress and I haven't had that problem since.

It is a hot blanket though, despite me having a "cooling" mattress topper. I had to install a split-AC system above my bed to keep me cool so I can use it.

I have this problem with the weighted portion of the blanket bunching up in areas, so maybe I didn't tie the ties perfectly tight, or there's more cover than what's needed. The cover seems to get "baggie" like there's too much excess. Part of my cover started coming apart at the seems, and this blanket never leaves the bed and doesn't get abused.

I often wonder why no one has designed anything better than weighted blankets that you have to tie the cover to. How about a blanket that you zip the cover onto, or it has button-snaps?

I own many weighted blankets because it has been a trial and error trying to find the perfect one. I've never had to assemble a blanket before out of all of them that the cover separates from the weighted portion.

My favorite blanket has been the Target brand one as it's so much more dense for being only 6 pounds! And the cover is like one with the weighted portion, it never bunches up and slides around, and doesn't get "baggie". I use that one for on-the-go.
Those blankets are sadly discontinued, the one I have works very well for me.

I do think I'm finally done buying weighted blankets now that the Harkla blankets are here. If for some reason I have to get a new Harkla blanket, I'm going to dread the day it shows up because I don't want to assemble it--I should just phone a friend instead and watch them get frustrated.
