Frequently Asked Questions about Weighted Blankets

How Heavy Should My Weighted Blanket Be?

The rule of thumb for a weighted blanket is to be 10% of your body weight, plus a pound or two. So for a 60-pound child, our 7-pound blanket would work best.

Here is a chart to help:

What Are the Dimensions of the Blankets?

Do the poly pellets come with a smell?

Some of our bigger blankets that have a lot of poly pellets may come with a slight "new plastic" smell. While the pellets are 100% food-grade, non-toxic plastic, since we make our own pellets, they are freshly made when put into the blankets.

On top of that, we vacuum seal our the inside weight to reduce the shipping size. This combines to create a slightly stronger odor than there will be once the plastic has time to air out.

The best protocol if your blanket has a slight smell is to let is air out for a day or two. That tends to get rid of it. On top of that, you can wash it with a cup of vinegar and Febreez it as well. It should dissipate very quickly.

What is the Science Behind Weighted Blankets?

The science behind weighted blankets is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). DTP is simply distributed weight across the body. If you'd like to read more about DTP, we wrote a guide to it here

DTP releases serotonin in the body, as well as decreased nervous system activity. These combine to give a feeling of calm, relaxation, and improved sleep. If you'd like to dive into the studies about weighted blankets and the science behind them, we wrote an article on it here.

Who Do Weighted Blankets Work for?
