DEEP TOUCH PRESSURE
The science behind weighted lap pads is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). DTP is simply distributed weight across the body. If you'd like to read more about the natural benefits of DTP, we wrote a guide to it here.
DTP releases serotonin in the body which turns into melatonin, as well as decreased nervous system activity. These combine to give a feeling of calm, relaxation and naturally improved sleep. If you'd like to dive into the studies about weighted lap pads and the science behind them, we wrote an article on it here.
1% OF ALL SALES GO TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AUTISM CENTER
At Harkla, our goal is to help those with special needs live happy and healthy lives. To continue this mission, we donate 1% of every sale to the University of Washington Autism Center. This money gets split between providing families in the Seattle area access to therapy they can't afford, funding cutting edge autism research, and our annual scholarship to the University of Washington Autism Center's APEX Summer Camp.
"AS A BUSINESS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING FAMILIES, HARKLA HAS GENEROUSLY PROVIDED MULTIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS SO THAT CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND ADHD CAN ATTEND OUR SUMMER CAMP AT THE UW AUTISM CENTER. WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR HARKLA'S SUPPORT!"

I have several weighted blankets that I've used for a couple years. They are extremely soothing. They help me a TON with sleep - and with them, I can fall asleep and wake up many hours later in the same position rather than restlessly tossing and turning all night. SO....my senior golden retriever (13 years old; 70lbs) has a recurring wrist injury. Every time she re-injures it, it's really hard on her and causes her much distress. This spring she has injured it twice in 3 months! We can manage the pain for her and keep it immobilized while it heals, but for her, we can tell she gets really frustrated with each recurring injury (she can be quite dramatic, good thing we know her so well!). On a whim I purchased this blanket for her. She's only used it for 3 days so far, but she really (!) likes it! It keeps her still and resting so she can heal. It even helps when we apply ice bc she's not trying to get up and get the ice off! I can leave the room (usually she would try to follow me which is not good when trying to limit movement) and she is in such a deep slumber that she doesn't even notice I left for a few minutes. This seems to be a high quality blanket, perfect for a child, or for a large dog!
Received the weighted lap puppy today. Perfect size for my 7 year old. It was a bit more I than I wanted to pay but when you have a child with ADHD you are willing to try anything that may help. The weight is evenly distributed and it's very soft. The puppy has a cute smile on it. I'm hopeful the cuteness of it will entice him to keep it in his lap with him and the weighted aspect of it will help with his sensory seeking needs. It came in a zipper carrying bag for storage and transport. The outer cover can be removed by opening the Velcro strip that runs along the underside. The Velcro strip is well tucked in so it won't catch on clothing or scratch legs.
I love this. Especially for when my toddler is sleeping. He usually needs me to lightly squeeze his hand .. his arm or even his face with my hands for him to go to sleep. He needs to feel my weight on him to sleep. But he wakes us as soon as he feels I’m gone. I put this on his leg or hisHands so I can step away. And he feels more secure
These are going to be great for my classroom.
My 16 month old has Trisomy 21 and has never really gotten attached to stuffed animals. She LOVES her lap dog. She gives him kisses and hugs and pets his nose. She actually gets calm when he is on her lap!! Since we don’t have pets. This is her first official puppy!!!
