Weighted Vest Benefits

Recommended for Autism & Sensory Processing Disorder

For people with autism, sensory processing dysfunction can manifest in language delays or deficits, fine and gross motor delays, strong sensory interests, sensory aversions, an inability to interact with people and objects, an inability to stay within an interaction, repetitive sensory stereotypies (stimming), and much more.

If you have a child with autism, his/her occupational therapist may have recommended a weighted vest to help with hyperactivity, focus, and/or self-stimulatory behaviors.

About Sensory Issues & Autism

Deep Touch Pressure

A weighted vest provides deep touch pressure (DTP), or proprioceptive input, which has a calming, organizing effect on the child.

Occupational therapists often recommend wearables that provide deep touch pressure as part of a comprehensive sensory diet to help children with autism who have sensory processing disorder or self-regulation difficulties.

About Deep Pressure Therapy

Increased Focus and Attention

The gentle weight of the vest provides proprioceptive input through the muscles and joints. This sensory input can feel calming and organizing, which may help support focus and attention during everyday activities.

Try the Weighted Vest during classroom learning, homework, transitions, or other activities where a little extra sensory support may be helpful.

Weighted Vest Science

Why the Weight?

Weighted vests use Deep Touch Pressure (DTP)—gentle, evenly distributed weight that helps the body feel grounded and secure.

DTP can support the release of serotonin (which converts to melatonin) and reduce nervous system activity. Together, these responses may promote calm, relaxation, and better sleep.

Comfortable, great fit, and looks just like regular clothing

We already own several Harkla products like their sensory swings, weighted blankets, and body socks, so I knew the quality would be good when trying out this vest for my sensory-seeking kids. It has worked out great for us.

The size 12/14 fits both my 12-year-old and 14-year-old comfortably (my 14-year-old is pictured). The biggest win with older kids and teens is that it just looks like a sporty, two-tone casual vest. It doesn't look like therapy gear, so they don't feel self-conscious wearing it around others. The cotton blend is soft, and the inner lining doesn't bunch up or itch over a shirt.

Setting up the weight is very straightforward. It comes with 12 individual weight packets that slide into snap pockets along the torso and hidden zippered spots at the shoulders, so everything stays evenly balanced without shifting around. The included guide from their OT is actually helpful, giving clear advice on weight limits (around 4-5% of body weight) and wearing schedules like 20 to 40-minute intervals.

The deep pressure gives my kids the exact calming feedback they need to settle down and focus during schoolwork. Really happy with this vest and glad to have it as part of our sensory tools.

All weather material, very light

As soon as this arrived last night we opened it and had one of my kids try it on. He wore it for 30min and he forgot he had it on.

This vest is so nice! It looks like a regular vest which is so important to these kiddos, so they don't look different. You can tell this company had that in mind. The stitching looks great, the vest material is light so it can be worn almost all year around for school.

It came with 2 different weights, they are very well made and fit great in each pocket. I love that the pockets has snaps instead of velcro to close them.

It also has pockets around the shoulder area for more pressure.

I want to order another one for my other kid but I have to wait for them to release size 6/7. It is a bit pricey considering kids grow up so fast but hopefully it would be totally worth it.

I'm very happy with it!

Weighted vest-you choose your weight

Very happy with this! My son (8 yrs old) who is asd, has sensory processing disorder. As he's aged, he's gotten a lot better but things like this help keep him from hitting that threshold.

This looks like a normal vest. No one would even know there's anything therapeutic about it. Not that I care but you know it makes my son feel better. He used to like to wear those compression tank tops, but they look ridiculous (in his words not mine.) as he gets older he just wants stuff that fits in and looks the same as everybody else else's.

What is super awesome about this vest is it's flexible. You choose your weights. You have plenty to choose from and different sizes. They line all around the bottom- front and back and on the shoulders front and back and top. On the shoulders, there's zippers that slide the little beanbag weights in and on the bottom they just slide in and snap shut . Even if you don't put a weight in or skip every other one empty you can't tell. Some days he may not want as much weight as the previous day that's what's nice about this. It grows with them and it's flexible.

My youngest son (6) who has a little bit of attention disorder-we also tried it on him. We were just putting a weighted blanket on his lap during school and this time we tried the vest perfect worked like a charm. I'll be ordering a smaller one for him.
