The perfect addition to your child's bedroom!

Bedtime IMPROVED! Have you struggled to help your child relax and get restful sleep? Start your journey to better sleep (and mood!) with a compression sheet. Harkla's Sensory Compression Sheet for autism, adhd, sensory issues, and anxiety offers deep touch pressure (like a hug!) which helps regulate the nervous system. This releases melatonin helping relax your child. The melatonin turns into serotonin leading to deeper, more restful sleep. You'll love how your child curls up under the compression sheet as they relax and drift to sleep.

Easy to set up and remove -- made machine washable.

Children get messy. That's why our sensory bed sheet is an easy on/off the bed and designed to be machine washable. Simply slide the sensory sheet over the mattress like a sleeve. The sheet fits snugly around two-thirds of the bed leaving plenty of room for both the head and feet to stick out accommodating those who prefer their feet not be compressed.

What is a Sensory Compression Sheet?

Compression sheets are soft, machine washable, breathable, and made with sensory needs in mind. The perfect addition to bedtime, the compression sheet allows for movement without decreasing the input provided.

Harkla’s sensory compression sheet offers deep touch pressure (like a hug), which helps regulate the nervous system. Deep touch pressure releases serotonin which then turns into melatonin, leading to deeper, more restful sleep.

Who Can Benefit From a Compression Sheet?

Anyone who needs to sleep better!

But let’s get more specific. The compression sheet was designed specifically for children with sensory processing challenges, including those with or without a diagnosis (i.e. autism, ADHD, etc.), who struggle to fall and stay asleep at night.

Let’s break down the benefits a bit more!

Let’s look at a child struggling with bedtime - specifically falling asleep, which includes getting into bed and staying in bed. This child may crawl into bed at bedtime, but then they toss and turn, cannot get comfortable, refuse to close their eyes and get up out of bed several times.

They may also exhibit signs of anxiety or hyperactivity, despite the late hour. This child may benefit from using the compression sheet during the bedtime routine - crawling underneath for calming compression, laying under the sheet while reading, etc. The calming compression may help this child get more comfortable and begin to drift off to sleep.

Now let’s look at a child who falls asleep easily but then wakes up several times throughout the night. This child is exhausted but cannot seem to stay asleep for more than a couple of hours at a time (if that!). Then, once up, they struggle to fall asleep again. This happens several times every night, and come morning, everyone is exhausted. This child may benefit from using the compression sheet throughout the night, especially while initially falling asleep.

Sensory Inputs Provided by the Sensory Sheets

Deep Touch Pressure

The compression sheet specifically provides proprioceptive input - deep pressure as well as tactile input, which is also known as Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). This type of sensory input has been shown to provide a calming effect for various individuals and situations.

Proprioceptive input Proprioception is the awareness of the position and movement of the body. Sensory receptors are located on your skin, joints, and muscles. When we move, these sensory receptors send signals to our brain, telling it about the movement's effort, force, and heaviness. Then our body can provide an appropriate response.

When we think about proprioceptive movement, we can also include heavy work - any movement that works the muscles and deep pressure - any input that provides pressure to our body, and vibration. Proprioceptive input is typically calming to the nervous system.

Individuals are usually not over-responsive to proprioception, meaning they don't have over-reactions to this type of sensory input. We do, however, see individuals who are under-responsive or sensory craving, meaning they want more heavy work, crashing, hugs, etc. These individuals typically respond well to the input that a compression sheet provides.

The compression sheet provides proprioceptive input as you lay underneath it. You can adjust your body to get comfortable and adjust the sheet to cover your entire body or just your legs - whatever feels good! Because it’s breathable, you can also safely lay fully underneath.

Tips For Introducing The Compression Sheet to Your Child

Some children LOVE the compression sheet immediately - these children love the compression that is provided.

However, some children are more hesitant when using the sheet and may be resistant for a variety of reasons. Some children do not like the new feeling initially - new and different can be hard! Additionally, some children struggle to process tactile input, and while the sheet is made out of soft material, it is still new, and again, new can be challenging, especially for kiddos who are more rigid in their thinking! This is especially true for adding a new item to the bedtime routine.

The first thing we need to do when introducing the sheet is have empathy for the child who is resistant. Empathy allows us to look deeper, use our sensory goggles, and try to understand WHY the child is resisting.

If your child is resistant to using the compression sheet, try these tips to engage them:

  • Talk about what the sheet is for. Use positive verbiage. “This can help your body feel calm when you’re trying to fall asleep.”
  • Start small. Allow your child to explore the sheet before using it for bedtime. Take your time. Talk about how the material feels. Talk about how your child can move around under it.
  • Try using it when your child is happy and calm during the day. “Hey, let’s try out your sheet for 5 minutes while you’re reading!” This provides a positive association. Let them control when they want to stop using it for the moment.
  • Use the sheet during play activities. Play a hide and seek game. Make the blanket seem fun.
  • Once your child is comfortable with the sheet, start trialing it during the bedtime routine. “Let’s use your sheet while we read before bed.” Then talk about how it felt to use the sheet. “Did you feel calm or more silly when you were under the sheet?”
  • Try adding a picture of the sheet to the child’s visual schedule or daily routine schedule so they can see a picture of when they’re expected to use it.
  • Never force your child to use the compression sheet. It is meant to be a positive tool, not a negative consequence.
  • Don’t stress if your child seems to love the sheet one day but refuses it the next. Some days are better than others. Plus, as your child learns more about how their body feels, they may not need it every day/night.

Always make sure that the child can move independently in and out from the compression sheet.

Tips For Incorporating The Compression Sheet to Your Child

Once your child is comfortable using the compression sheet, you can begin to incorporate it into their day and evening as needed - to help with anxiety, focus and attention, sleep, and overstimulation.

  • Try playing different games with the compression sheet. Hide and seek; push items through like a tunnel; etc.
  • Play pretend by tucking your child’s toys into the compression sheet. Role-playing challenging tasks (such as bedtime) can be beneficial. Talk about how the toys benefit from using the sheet, how they get great sleep and feel very rested the next day.
  • Have your child participate in putting the sheet on and taking it off the bed.
  • Use the compression sheet in a quiet sensory corner to provide deep touch pressure when needed for self-regulation.

Curious about compression?

Deep Touch Pressure

The Harkla Compression Sheet does just what its name implies, it provides compression! The science behind the Harkla Compression Sheet is Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). DTP is simply distributed weight across the body. If you'd like to read more about the natural benefits of DTP, we wrote a guide to it here.

DTP releases serotonin in the body which turns into melatonin, as well as decreased nervous system activity. These combine to give a feeling of calm, relaxation and naturally improved sleep. If you'd like to dive into the studies about deep touch pressure, we wrote an article on it here.

Perfect

Our son is autistic and loves sensory things. He loves the sensation of being hugged. It’s not super easy to get on, but once on it’s great.

Great product!

These sheets give the same result as a weighted blanket, but without the warmth. They also do not constrict my child and move quite easily. Very happy!

Not long enough

I loved the idea of this, the material is soft, wasn't too hard to get on the mattress. Unfortunately it isn't long enough to cover my body. Either my feet are put or my upper body is. Wish it was longer!!!!

Nice compression sheet

My daughters really like this sheet. It's hard to get on, but not impossible and if we're easy to get on, it probably would not give the compression. One of my daughters would not go to sleep by herself, and now she will (which makes the hard to get on the bed factor totally worth it). It has a nice thickness, feel, and seems well made.

My ASD son loves it.

I have that boy that doesn't stop moving long enough to actually fall asleep. He was always cold because he would kick off his covers. NOT ANYMORE. He slides right in, and now even his comforter doesn't get shuffled off because he cant twist and turn SOOO dramatically anymore. It's nicely breathable for a hot sleeper. I like the colour. It feels quality made! My other two kids now both want them!Only downside - even for the most stubborn and independent bed maker - it's hitting the limits of a one person job to get it on. Best to have an extra set of hands.

Worth the money

It’s light and breathable material. Easy to put on the mattress. This was recommended by an occupational therapist to us. My son likes to use the compression sheet for a couple of hours then transition to a comforter.

Finally, great sleep for my toddler!

My son has sensory issues and loves deep pressure. He kept waking up and sleeping on the floor and getting up early. We didn’t know if it was a toddler phase or sensory issues. This sheet solved all of it, he stays in bed all night so long as we tuck him into it at bed time, falls asleep quickly and sleeps to a reasonable hour. This is a nice quality item too, I think it’ll last and the dark blue goes with his room. Highly recommend!

Dormiendo la noche entero.

Mi hijo posiblemente Tea con 5 años por fin duerme la noche entera. Lo llevamos de viaje con nosotros también, porque la vez que se me olvidó, despertó y desveló como antes.

Almost 5 stars

This product is wonderfully made and it really was able to give the sensation of a weighted blanket without the weight. My only issues are that it made sleeping REALLY chilly! I usually sleep hot, so I keep my room pretty cool at night and use a fan. Even with the use of a thermal blanket and turning up the temperature, I was chilly. It's why I've eventually gone back to my weighted blanket.Another issue I had was it was too short for my 6ft tall self. When I slept, my feet suck out (which is part of the design) but the sheet wouldn't go up past my chest area. I really would've liked it to at least go to my shoulders. If you could offer tall versions in the future, that might be a great option for us tall people!

Great quality, fits bed well

Fits my son's twin bed well. He loves the feel of it, it's very soft/slippery feeling and he sleeps under it every night. It's light compression so there is no worry about him sleeping with it (he is 4). Highly recommend.

Great buy!

My son has SPD and struggles at night going to sleep. But this compression sheet is a blessing. He absolutely loves the feeling and explained that he feels safe and eases him to sleep.

8 year old loves his, me not so much

I got this for my son who regularly uses a weighted blanket. He sleeps hot and no matter what "cooling technology" he still tends to sweat with them. I came across this one sale and figured it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I bought one for myself as well. I wasn't a fan of it for me. My son however loves his, he asked me to order another one. It definitely helps calm him at the end of the day and get to sleep quicker. It is a bit difficult to get on the bed by yourself, but not impossible.

Amazing

I bought these sheets to go on bunk beds because I was tired of fighting with the traditional sheets and comforters that I had on the beds. I looked at zipper bedding and it’s too expensive and babyish. I took a chance on these sheets and put them on the beds a week ago. Not only is it much easier to keep the beds made but the bonus is that my son has been sleeping extremely well since we put them on. He did think they were a little weird at first because once your under the sheet, your under it. But, once he relaxed he was asleep and stayed asleep the entire night. When I’ve gone in to wake him up for school he’s still under the sheet and I haven’t been greeted by a bear in the morning. He did say that because the material is thin he did get cold the first night but the second night he’s used a blanket on top and he hasn’t complained about being cold since.

We love our hug sheet

This sheet gives a similar effect to a weighted blanket, but will stay on my kiddo at night, whereas a weighted blanket falls off or they wiggle out. It’s also fun to play with. It gets used as a tunnel and a fun hiding spot as well!

Buy this.

Bought this and a weighted blanket from another company for my 3 year old son. He never wants to sleep in his bed and has an obsession with sleeping on the hard floor. Also liked to bang his head on the floor when going to bed. Guess where he is right now. In the compression sheet in his twin bed. Buy it. Super soft and the kids love to play with it. Worth every penny and my sanity.

Excellent product

My 3 year old wakes for hours at a time in the middle of the night. This product was a serious game changer. She has slept through almost every night since we put it on- we also use a weighted blanket with it. I recommend using it with a cotton sheet between your child and the product. Wonderful, thank you

Best feeling ever

As long as I have been on this planet, you’d think I’d be an expert at going to sleep already, but that is just not the case. It is way too hard for me to settle down and go to bed, and once I get there, I usually lay there and toss and turn for hours, not getting any sleep. The Harkla Sensory Compression Sheet is simply amazing, and has made going to bed, something for me to look forward to.I am using a 15lb, weighted blanket alongside the compression sheet, and it is a really powerful combination. Before I got the sheet, I was using 2, 15lb blankets for a total of 30lbs, and I’m only 112lbs! That’s unhealthy for my body and I was waking up with sore joints. Now that I have the compression sheet, I was able to go back to using a weighted blanket that was more appropriate for my body weight, and increase the amount of gentle and even pressure all over my body.I am also using a 3”, memory foam mattress topper on my twin bed. Getting the sheet on wasn’t difficult at all.The compression sheet feels absolutely amazing, and I’ve never felt anything like it before. It’s such a snug, comforting feeling. It truly does feel like a hug all over my body. I love the stretchiness of the material, it eases my anxiety and satisfies my sensory seeking needs. It also feels nice and cool and breathable, I can’t wait to see how it performs on the hottest of summer days. I like how it is open at the bottom so your feet can stick out. I also sleep with a small fan at my feet, and the sheet kind of acts like a wind tunnel, cooling my entire body. I love this thing! I going have to get another one for a backup. I can’t keep this sheet a secret anymore, I love it so much and it’s totally a game changer. And the amount of quality sleep I am able to get, is well worth the investment!! I have to share this with all my friends and let them know what they’re missing out on.I am a new Harkla customer, and I will be returning!!Edit: 3 months later, we’re now in the summer months, and my compression sheet has lost it’s elasticity. It just kind’ve feels like a loose sheet on the bed. Also, I think they could improve this sheet by making the bottom more closed, but still open so my feet can stick out or get some air. It feels too open and loose down there.

Better sleep

We have an Autistic 19 year old son who has trouble sleeping sometimes. Weighted blankets aren’t big enough so when I found this, had to try it for him. Easy to put on and the first time I showed him and helped him get under it, he stayed in bed and fell asleep. He has been using it every night for months and sleeps better than he has in years! I also ordered for my grandson and granddaughter. They are not autistic but they love theirs as well. Highly recommended.
